Award Eligibility Post for 2024
The
year’s not yet over, but it’s that time when writers begin posting about their
award-eligible work. This year I had four short stories published. I would be
honored if you took a look at any of them.
“The
Cold Inside” (dark fantasy, 4300 words) in Metaphorosis.
March 2024.
A
story about a ghost who knocks on a door. A story about grief and guilt, set among
the woods and water of northern Michigan.

Mead-Brewer’s weekly newsletter (March 6, 2024): “Vanessa Fogg’s
prose always braids tight with poetry, and her tale “The Cold Inside” is no different; a life may be a
story, but a ghost is always a poem.”

in Maria Haskin’s March
2024 Short Fiction Roundup: “A hauntingly beautiful and chilling (in
more ways than one) story about grief and loss. . . a delicate and
profound unspooling of emotions, love, regret, and loneliness.”
“The
Red Queen’s Heart” (fantasy, 2294 words) in Lightspeed.
July 2024.
A
story about a magical night market, a once-conquering Queen, and what we give
up to survive. Lightspeed Magazine also offers this story as a podcast, with a
beautiful narration by Stefan Rudnicki

“Remembering Day” (science
fiction, 4717 words) in Uncharted Magazine. July 2024.
This
tale didn’t get as much attention as some of my others this year, but it’s
honestly one of my favorite. It’s a far-future story about mind-uploading, but
it’s really an ode to the bodies—and lives—that we have right now.
“That Small, Hard Thing
on the Back of Your Neck” (weird/dark fantasy, 3281 words) in The
Future Fire. October 2024.
My
dark, weird little story about a troubled teenage girl and the masks/skins that
we all wear.
